Desires are the raw materials that come from your soul, the seeds of your unique creations. Pay attention to them! Every fulfillment in your life started as a desire. Water those seeds, they are your road to happiness.
How often do we hear of young people going through the rigors of medical school and residency, only to leave their years of study behind to pursue other careers that ignite their passion? Or business majors leaving jobs they found unrewarding to work in the arts. “Good girls” and “good boys” who were following their well-meaning parents’ dreams for them, or what society richly rewards, rather than their innate desires. They were not able to sustain the energy to continue doing what didn’t satisfy them. Tragically, many continued for decades with heavy regrets, wishing they had followed their dreams.
Listen deeply to yourself. No one knows you better than you!
- What interests you, what draws your attention?
- What work excites you?
- Who are the people that attract you?
- What books do you like to read? What movies do you like to see?
Do you prefer the city or the country, skiing or basking in the sun? What colors do you prefer? Foods do you enjoy? What music turns you on? What hobbies do you choose? Your unique tastes are yours to follow.
Parents, take heed. Listen to your young children.
Support them in following their interests, encourage them to lead the way. They will continually change, but in the process will learn what meets them and what doesn’t. They will eventually discover their talents and what brings them joy. They will be happy, and perhaps years later, grateful to you for allowing them to be true to themselves.
I invite all of you to share your stories and support one another here.
